Violence Intervention

Our team of Peace Ambassadors works to make New Orleans safer by mediating conflicts in the community before they escalate into gun violence. When a shooting does happen, the team is called in to help prevent retaliation and disrupt the cycle of violence.

Ambassadors help participants come up with a plan to reduce the risk of further harm, connecting them with resources like employment, mental health assistance, and educational needs. Each ambassador is a trusted community member who has overcome challenges of their own, making them excellent mentors and credible messengers.

The Peace Ambassador program is part of a collaborative, public health-based approach to reducing gun violence that includes University Medical Center, the New Orleans Health Department, and the City’s Office of Violence Prevention.

The Peace Ambassador program is completely independent of law enforcement. We protect personal information and never share it with the police.
